PANTHERS THWART SPARTANS UPSET BID
AUGUST 27th- The Permian Panthers rallied to score 19 points in the fourth quarter, defeating the Pebble Hills Spartans from El Paso 26-15 at Ratliff Stadium.

The game couldn't start any better for MOJO, as Brian Mahaffey returned the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown. It was Mahaffey's first touch after sitting out all of 2020 with an injury. The score gave the Panthers a quick 7-0 lead.

After the exciting start the first half turned into a mistake-filled quagmire. The Pebble Hills defense and untimely penalties would prove to be a thorn in Permian's side, as potential scoring drives were stymied time and again by turnovers. A muffed snap by the Permian punt team resulted in a safety for the Spartans. The first quarter ended with Permian on top 7-2.

The second quarter found MOJO struggling to hold on to the ball. The Spartans finally put together a short drive following a turnover, scoring a touchdown as the half ended. The PAT gave the Spartans a 9-7 lead going into the break.

The third quarter was much like the first two. A promising Permian drive ended when they fumbled on the Pebble Hills six yard line. The Black Attack defense stepped up to make sure the Spartans couldn't take advantage of the gift, forcing a punt. But the Panthers would fumble it back three plays later. The third quarter ended with Pebble Hills knocking on the door.

As the final period began, the Spartans took advantage of the short field with a four yard touchdown run. Pebble Hills held a 15-7 lead early in the fourth, and it looked like the El Paso upset would materialize. MOJO had other ideas however. Quarterback Rodney Hall connected with Mahaffey on a 34 yard scoring strike to pull the Panthers to within two points at 15-13 with 9:32 remaining.

The MOJO defense stepped up again on the ensuing popssession, as Jaydn Pruitt grabbed his second intercerption of the evening. The Panthers took adavantage immediately when Hall hit Mahaffey in stride for a 56 yard touchdown. The two point conversion attempt failed, but the Panthers had the lead for good at 19-15 with 5:42 remaining.

The Spartans tried to respond, but a quarterback sack by Drake Womack on fourth down gave Permian possession on the Pebble Hills 16 yard line. Tristan Johnson put the final nail in the coffin with a short touchdown run three plays later. The game ended with MOJO on top 26-15.

Rodney Hall threw for two touchdowns, both going to Brian Mahaffey. Defensively the Panthers got interceptions from Jaydn Pruitt and Kayden Baze. The win gives Permian a 1-0 record.

On Thursday the Permian JV Black team scored a 34-8 win over Pebble Hills, while the Freshman Black team defeated their Pebble Hills counterparts 18-0. JV White fell 16-0 to San Angelo Central.

Permian quarterback Rodney Hall pulled off a spectacular quarterback draw on the ensuing Permian possession, breaking into the clear and running for a 50-yard touchdown and a 9-6 lead for MOJO.

It took Midway just two plays to answer as their running back exploded for a 59 yard touchdown run, giving Midway a 13-9 edge with 8:15 left in the second quarter.

There was plenty of second quarter scoring to come, as Hall hit Richardson on a scoring strike from 19 yards to regain a 16-13 lead.

The lead didn’t last long, as Hall hit Brian Mahaffey for 33 yards. Hall then executed the quarterback draw again for a 32 yard touchdown as MOJO regained the lead 23-20 with 1:17 left before halftime.

But that wasn’t the end of the second quarter scoring, as Midway struck on a 35 yard touchdown pass to give them a 27-23 advantage going into the break.

The second half started much as the first half had ended. Permian received the second half kick and scored quickly, with Hall connecting with a wide-open Richardson for a 73 yard touchdown. Permian was back on top 29-27.

Midway would answer with a 26-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-29 with 7:38 left in the third quarter. It was the last lead the Midway Panthers would enjoy.

Permian quickly answered with another scoring pass from Hall to Richardson as Permian regained a 36-34 advantage. The MOJO defense got a big stop on the next series when Kayden Baze intercepted a pass at the five yard line and returned it 22 yards.

After stopping Midway's last gasp trick play on fourth down, MOJO put a cap the win with Johnson’s two yard scoring run with under a minute to play. The game ended with Permian on top 57-41.

PERMIAN IS TRIPPED UP BY TASCOSA
SEPTEMBER 10th- The Permian Panthers lost their first game of the season, falling to Amarillo Tascosa 40-21 Friday night at Ratliff Stadium.

Tascosa gained the upper hand early,  blocking a Permian punt to give themselves a short field to work with in the first quarter’s opening minutes.

Although the Rebels failed to get into the endzone, the Panthers still found themselves behind after Tascosa forced a bad pitch on an option sweep, recovering the fumble and falling into the endzone for a touchdown. The PAT was no good, but the Rebels held a 6-0 lead with 5:14 remaining in the first quarter.

Tascosa got on the board again in the second quarter with a seven play, 68 yard scoring drive. The Rebels converted the two-point conversion to take a 14-0 advantage into the halftime break. The Rebels outgained MOJO 135-83 in the first half and the Panthers were penalized seven times to lose 70 yards.

Tascosa were looking to extend its lead with a 75-yard run to open the second half, but a penalty brought the play back to the Permian 40. It made no difference however, as the Rebels needed just one play to score on a 35 yard touchdown run. Tascosa was up 21-0 with 11:40 left in the third quarter.

Permian finally found the endzone on a nine play, 82 yard drive. Permian fumbled the ball going in, but Devon Pierce recovered the fumble in the end zone to make the score 21-7.

Tascosa completed their longest pass of the game on the ensuing possession, finding a receiver open down the left sideline for a 58-yard touchdown. The Rebels were up 27-7.

The teams would then trade scores the rest of the way. Permian found the end zone again before the third quarter ended, but the Rebels answered with another touchdown in the fourth to go up 33-14.

SEPTEMBER 17th- Rodney Hall rushed for three touchdowns, with Tristan Johnson and Juzstyce Lara rushing for more than 100 yards each to lead the Permian Panthers to a 49-14 victory over Mesquite Poteet Friday at Ratliff Stadium.

The Pirates became Permian's Week Four opponent after both teams had late cancellations of their previously scheduled games.

Mesquite Poteet showed immediately that it made the six hour trek to Odessa to compete, scoring on a 67 yard run on the second play of the game.

Tristan Johnson answered for MOJO, busting through over the right side of the line and outracing the Pirate defense for a 63 yard score. The touchdown tied the game at 7-7 and would start a run of 42 unanswered points by the Panthers.

Brian Mahaffey got into the act on the next Panthers possession, capping an eight play 75 yard drive with a seven yard touchdown run. Tate Terry's PAT gave MOJO a 14-7 lead.

After a lengthy lightning delay the Panthers took up where they left off, with Rodney Hall scoring on a 41 yard touchdown scamper. The Eagles got on the board first with a 12-play, 70-yard drive that was capped off with a five yard rushing touchdown, giving Abilene a 7-0 lead.

MOJO would answer with a 70 yard drive of their own behind some big plays from Rodney Hall. The junior quarterback ran for 34 yards and threw a 10 yard screen pass to Ja'Quan Richardson, squaring up the score at 7-7 with 3:31 left in the first quarter.

It would take the Eagles less than two minutes to find the end zone again on a 27 yard touchdown pass, giving Abilene a 14-7 advantage to close out the period.

The Eagles defense stymied the Panthers throughout the second quarter, holding the home team to negative yardage on offense and capitalizing on big plays to increase their lead. Abilene found the end zone again with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 4:32 left before the intermission. The Panthers went into the halftime break down 21-7.

The Panthers received the second half kickoff but could not get anything going. After a short punt, the Eagles got into the endzone again on a one play, 52 yard drive. The score gave Abilene a 28-7 lead.

MOJO would cut the deficit to 28-14 when Hall connected with Juzstyce Lara for a 21 yard touchdown on a swing pass up the left side.

After a good defensive stand the Panthers put together another promising drive, but a fumble at the Abilene 13 yard line would stop the drive just as they were knocking on the door.

From there the Eagles solidified their lead with a pair of short touchdowwn runs by their quarterback, making the score 42-14 with just 1:41 remaining in the contest.

Richardson and Hall would connect one more time again on a 72 yard touchdown pass but it was too little, too late. The clock ran out with Abilene on top 42-21.

MOJO TAKES DOWN FRENSHIP TIGERS
OCTOBER 1st- The Permian Panthers weathered a 90 minute lightning delay as well as a flood of yellow flags to come away with a key district win over Frenship on Friday.

The result kept the Panthers (4-2 overall, 1-1 district) in the middle of the District 2-6A race while handing the Tigers (4-2, 1-1) their first district loss.

Behind the tough running of Tristan Johnson,  the Panthers dominated from the start. MOJO took control of the game with a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Deonte Bass scored another touchdown for MOJO in the second period on a 25 yard screen pass from Robert Hall. Tate Terry would add a 25 yard field goal to give the Panthers a 17-0 halftime lead.

Frenship, held in check during the first half, finally got on the board with a touchdown pass from six yards out, making the score 17-7 midway through the third quarter.

Permian would go on a time consuming drive that extended into the final period. Facing a 2nd and eight from the Frenship 19 yard line the warning sirens were activated in the stadium, signaling there was lightning in the area. The teams were sent to the locker rooms for what would be a 90 minute delay.

When play resumed, the Tigers sacked quarterback Rodney Hall on 4th down to take over at their own 21 yard line. From their the Tigers capped a 34-yard drive with a 15 touchdown pass, making the score 17-14 Panthers with 3:09 remaining.

The Tigers would hold Permian in check again, forcing the Panthers to punt. But the kick was shanked and only traveled two yards. Frenship had the ball at the 49 yard line in prime position to steal the win with 1:52 remaining.

But the Permian defense, which had been on their heels ever since the weather delay, would come alive. Linebacker Jaxon Dorethy came crashing off the edge for a five yard quarterback sack on third down. Facing 4th down with 35 seconds remaining, the Tiger's pass attempt fell incomplete. The game ended with Permian on top 17-14.

Tristan Johnson finished the game with 159 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries. Deonte Bass scored the other touchdown on a 25 yard screen pass. Tate Terry converted a 25 yard field goal. The win gives Permian a 1-1 record in District 2-6A (4-2 overall).

Rodney Hall busted a 62 yard run on the next Permian drive, but a fumble on the next play gave the Bobcats the ball once again.

This time, the Panthers defense would hold by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth and 27 to take over at their own 33 yard line.

PANTHERS FALL IN DISTRICT 2-6A FINALE
NOVEMBER 5th-The Permian Panthers dropped their final district contest to the Midland Legacy Rebels Friday at Grande Communications Stadium. Legacy won the District 2-6A title with the 34-21 win.

Permian tried to get things going by establishing the run on its opening drive, but that drive stalled when Legacy came up with a sack on third down to force an early punt from the Panthers.

After receiving the punt it only took three plays to cover 90 yards, with a short pass on a wheel route down the right sideline going for a 75-yard touchdown. Legacy had an early 7-0 lead.

Meanwhile the Panthers couldn’t get their offense going throughout the first quarter, and the Rebels took advantage of that by building up a 13-0 lead with another touchdown pass. Legacy would go up by 21 points early in the second quarter with a short touchdown run.

Just when it was looking like the game would get out of hand the Panthers started showing signs of life, with Rodney Hall finding Ja'Quan Richardson for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Tate Terry's PAT made it Legacy 21, Permian 7 with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter.

After MOJO forced a three and out, a little trickery would make the score 21-14. Zach Wheeler completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Salazar after Hall threw a quick swing pass to Wheeler behind the line of scrimmage. MOJO went into the break down 21-14.

Permian would get another boost to start the second half when Drake Womack intercepted a Rebels pass and returned it 43 yards to the Midland Legacy one-yard line.

The Panthers couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity and were held out of the end zone three times, then had a field goal attempt blocked as the Rebels maintained their seven point lead.

It would take up a large chunk of the third quarter, but the Rebels scored again on 17-yard touchdown run to put them up 28-14 with a little over two minutes left in the third period.

Permian made it close in the fourth quarter after Hall completed a 38-yard pass to Richardson down to the Legacy one yard line. Caysen Clinton punched it in from there to make it 28-21 with 6:55 left in regulation.

After it looked like Permian had held the Rebels late in the fourth quarter, Legacy faked the punt and ran for seven yards to give them a first down.

From there the Rebels were able to run the ball for the rest of the drive, capping it off with a three-yard rushing score with just a minute remaining. The game ended with Legacy on top 34-21.

Permian ran out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, capping off a nine play, 75-yard drive with an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Brian Mahaffey to take the early lead.

The Permian defense did a good job keeping the Trinity offense off the field throughout the first quarter, as the Trojans only ran seven plays.

The second quarter also started off well for the Panthers, as playmaking receiver Jaquan Richardson was able to break away for a 35-yard touchdown reception to put the Panthers on top 14-0.
